How to Spot Fake XChat Apps: A Safety Guide (2026)
Fake XChat apps have already hit App Store top charts. Here's how to tell the real XChat from imposters and avoid scam apps stealing your data.
A fake “XChat App” has already hit #2 on the Chinese App Store free chart. The same fake app sits at #2 in Hong Kong and #26 in Taiwan. Thousands of users have downloaded the wrong app by mistake.
The real XChat launches on April 23, 2026. Until then — and even after — scammers are cashing in on the name confusion.
This guide teaches you how to tell the real XChat from fake copies. Read this before you download anything called “XChat.”
The 30-second version
If you only have 30 seconds:
- Developer name must be X Corp (not "XChat App" or anything else)
- File size is around 175.8 MB
- Requires iOS 26.0 or iPadOS 26.0 or later
- Supports 46 languages
- Released on April 23, 2026 (not earlier)
- Official developer website: x.com
If any of these don’t match, it’s not the real XChat.
The fake “XChat App” story
This is important context. There’s a specific fake app causing most of the trouble.
A Russian developer published an app called “XChat App” on the iOS App Store in July 2024. At that time, Musk had not yet announced XChat. The app description is in Russian. It claims to be a “secure messaging tool” that deletes chats every 30 days.
Then in 2025-2026, Musk started talking about XChat. The news spread. Users rushed to the App Store to search for “XChat” — and found the 2024 Russian app first.
Because the name matched, thousands of people downloaded the wrong app. According to reports from Hong Kong, the fake app climbed to #2 on the free download chart in China and Hong Kong. In Taiwan, it reached #26.
User ratings tell the story. The fake app has a rating of just 2.2-2.3 out of 5, with recent reviews saying things like:
- “It’s fake xchat. u can’t connect to server.”
- “This is a scam software designed to steal passwords”
- “Will collect your personal privacy”
Apple has responded by saying app legitimacy is the developer’s responsibility. They have not removed the fake app. The burden is on you to verify.
What fake apps may do to you
Fake apps that pretend to be popular services can do real harm:
- Steal your X account login if you enter it
- Collect your contacts list and send it to unknown servers
- Read messages you type into the fake app
- Show endless ads or popups
- Charge you hidden subscription fees
- Track your location without telling you
- Install tracking profiles on your phone
- Try to get access to your photos or microphone
The fake “XChat App” has been flagged by users as a scam. Even if Apple reviewed it before publishing, that doesn’t mean it’s safe.
7 ways to verify the real XChat
1. Check the developer name
This is the single most important check.
In the App Store, tap the app’s page. Below the app name, you’ll see the developer. The real XChat developer is “X Corp”.
If it says:
- “XChat App” — ❌ fake
- “X Chat Inc.” — ❌ fake
- Any individual person’s name — ❌ fake
- A Russian, Chinese, or other name — ❌ fake
- Anything other than “X Corp” — ❌ fake
Only “X Corp” is the real X (formerly Twitter) company.
2. Check the launch date
The real XChat launches on April 23, 2026. Before that date, it exists only as a pre-order.
If an app called “XChat” is already live and available for full download before April 23, it is not the real one.
Apps claiming to be the “real” XChat on Google Play right now are also fake. The real XChat has no Android version yet.
3. Check the file size
The real XChat is about 175.8 MB, per the Apple App Store listing.
If the app is:
- Much smaller (under 50 MB) — ❌ likely fake
- Much larger (over 300 MB) — ❌ likely fake with extra malware
- Near 175.8 MB — ✅ possible match (check other signals too)
4. Check iOS requirements
The real XChat requires iOS 26.0 or later.
Some fake apps work on older iOS versions to hit more users. If the app runs on iOS 12 or 13, it’s probably not the real one.
5. Check language support
The real XChat supports 46 languages at launch, per multiple reports.
The fake “XChat App” by the Russian developer supports only English. If the app’s language list is extremely short, that’s a red flag.
6. Check reviews and rating
Look at the ratings before you download:
- Real app (at launch): no reviews yet, or very early reviews
- Fake app: often 2-3 stars with angry reviews from confused users
Scroll through recent reviews. If users are calling it a scam or saying “this isn’t the real XChat,” believe them.
7. Check the website link
In the App Store, tap the app page and scroll down to Developer Website. The real XChat links to x.com or twitter.com.
If the link goes anywhere else:
- Random
.netor.infodomain — ❌ fake - Developer personal portfolio — ❌ fake
- Blank or “No website” — ❌ likely fake
The fake “XChat Pro” APK scam on Android
Android users face a different threat.
Since the real XChat has no Android version yet, scammers are creating fake APK files for Android. These APKs are spread through:
- Random websites claiming “download XChat for Android”
- Forum posts and Reddit comments
- Telegram channels
- File-sharing sites
All of these are fake. There is no legitimate XChat APK. Any file you download from a third-party site could contain:
- Android spyware that reads your messages on other apps
- Banking trojans that steal passwords
- Ad fraud software that drains your battery
- Subscription fraud malware
One fake “XChat Pro APK” site even claims to be associated with Elon Musk’s official launch. It is not.
Do not sideload APKs claiming to be XChat. Wait for the official Google Play release (no date announced).
What to do if you already downloaded a fake
If you installed an app you now think is fake, take these steps:
- Delete the app immediately from your phone
- Change your X account password
- Enable two-factor authentication on X
- Review your X account for any unfamiliar logins
- Check your iOS Settings > Profiles for any unknown configurations
- Check your Subscriptions for any unexpected charges
- On Android, run a malware scan with a reputable security app
- Report the fake app to Apple or Google
If you entered your X password into a fake app, your account is compromised. Change your password from a trusted device and log out all sessions from X settings.
How to report fake apps to Apple and Google
You can help protect other users by reporting fake apps.
On Apple App Store:
- Open the fake app’s App Store page
- Scroll down to Report a Problem
- Select Report Suspicious App Activity
- Describe why you think it’s fake (name confusion, scam behavior, fake developer)
- Submit
On Google Play Store (when Android launches):
- Open the fake app’s Play Store page
- Tap the three dots menu
- Select Flag as inappropriate
- Choose Impersonation or Fraud
- Submit
Apple and Google don’t always remove fake apps fast, but multiple reports help.
Why Apple hasn’t removed the fake “XChat App”
Good question. Apple’s position is clear but frustrating: they say app legitimacy is the developer’s responsibility. Apple only removes apps that break their policies, not apps that happen to have confusing names.
This means:
- If an app uses a name like “XChat App” and has different functions, Apple allows it
- Only apps that directly copy X Corp’s icon, branding, or misleading screenshots get taken down
- Name similarity alone isn’t grounds for removal
The Russian “XChat App” has a different icon and description from the real XChat. That’s why it survives.
X Corp could sue for trademark infringement, but that takes months. In the meantime, the fake app stays up.
The bottom line
Fake XChat apps are already making real money off user confusion. A Russian imposter app hit #2 on the Chinese App Store chart. More fakes will follow the real launch on April 23.
Protect yourself by checking:
- Developer name must be X Corp
- Launch date is April 23, 2026 or later
- File size near 175.8 MB
- Requires iOS 26.0+
- Supports 46 languages
- Links to x.com
If any of these don’t match, don’t download.
For Android users: do not install any APK claiming to be XChat. No official Android version exists. Wait for X Corp’s official announcement.
When in doubt, wait. A day or two of patience beats a stolen X account.
