How XChat works
XChat requires an X (formerly Twitter) account to sign in — there's no separate registration. Once signed in, you can message any other XChat user, start voice or video calls, and share files. All communication is end-to-end encrypted, which means even X Corp cannot read your messages.
Unlike WhatsApp, XChat does not require a phone number. Your X username is your identity. This makes it harder to be tracked by phone number leaks and easier to use under pseudonyms.
Key features
End-to-end encryption by default
Every one-on-one and group chat is encrypted end-to-end. X Corp has stated they cannot access your messages even with a court order — the encryption keys live only on your devices.
No phone number required
Sign in with your X account. You're identified by your @handle, not your phone number.
Cross-platform calls
Voice and video calls are built into the app and also end-to-end encrypted.
No ads, no tracking
X Corp has committed to not showing ads inside XChat and not using message metadata for ad targeting.
When can I download XChat?
XChat launches worldwide on April 23, 2026 on the Apple App Store. It was originally scheduled for April 17 but was delayed by six days. See our download guide for step-by-step instructions.
Is XChat safe?
XChat uses end-to-end encryption, which is the current standard for secure messaging (the same approach used by Signal and WhatsApp). However, XChat is new, and its encryption protocol has not yet been independently audited by third-party security researchers. For highly sensitive communications, Signal remains the most conservative choice until XChat's protocol is reviewed.
How does XChat compare to WhatsApp?
Both offer end-to-end encryption, but they differ in important ways. WhatsApp requires a phone number; XChat uses your X handle. WhatsApp is owned by Meta and integrates with Facebook's ad ecosystem; XChat is owned by X Corp and promises no ads. For a detailed comparison, see our XChat vs WhatsApp article.
Is XChat free?
Yes. XChat is free to download and use. There are no premium tiers announced at launch.
