XChat for Android & Google Play Store: When Is It Coming?
Is XChat on the Google Play Store? When will the Android version launch? Here's what X Corp has said and how to avoid fake XChat apps.
XChat launches on April 23, 2026 — iPhone and iPad only. Android users get nothing at launch.
If you own an Android phone and want to use XChat, the short answer is: you’ll have to wait, and no one knows how long.
Here’s what we actually know, what we can guess, and what you should do in the meantime.
What X Corp has said about Android
Very little.
XChat’s Apple App Store listing confirms iOS availability on April 23. The listing says nothing about Android.
Elon Musk has not tweeted a date. X Corp has not issued a press release. The XChat official X account has been silent on Android.
This is not an accident. Companies usually stay quiet about future platforms until they’re close to ready. When Apple does it, we call it “secrecy.” When smaller companies do it, we call it “uncertain.”
Either way: no Android date exists as of April 17, 2026.
Why iOS first?
Three likely reasons:
1. Apple users are easier to target
iOS has fewer device variations. One app version runs on all iPhones. Android has thousands of different devices, screen sizes, and OS versions. iOS is the quick win.
2. X’s core users lean iPhone
In the US and Western Europe, active X users skew toward iPhone ownership. Launching where your audience already lives makes sense.
3. Testing is simpler
Apple’s App Store review is predictable. Google Play Store policies are looser but more varied. Launching iOS-first lets X Corp stabilize the app before tackling Android’s complexity.
None of this is unusual. WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal all launched iOS-only before adding Android. The gap was usually months, not years.
Best guess for the Android timeline
We don’t know. But we can make educated guesses based on patterns.
- Earliest: 2-3 months after iOS (June-July 2026)
- Typical: 6 months after iOS (October 2026)
- Latest: 12+ months (April 2027 or later)
The actual timeline depends on several factors:
If iOS launch goes well: X Corp likely accelerates Android to capture new users. Could be 3-6 months.
If iOS has problems: Android gets pushed back while iOS is fixed. Could be 6-12 months.
If XChat fails to attract users: Android may never happen. X Corp could quietly shelve it, like many abandoned app projects.
If X Corp pivots to “super app” mode: Android could be delayed to ship with payments, shopping, and other features bundled. Could be 12+ months.
Our best guess: Q3 or Q4 2026 for Android. But this is speculation.
What about a web version?
A web version would solve the Android problem partially. You could use XChat in Chrome on your Android phone, just like WhatsApp Web.
Based on public reporting, a web version is “planned” but not scheduled. No date has been confirmed.
Web apps are often easier to ship than native Android apps. A web version could arrive before Android. Or it could arrive at the same time.
No promises from X Corp on either.
Fake “XChat” apps on Google Play: a warning
This is critical, so read carefully.
There is no official XChat on the Google Play Store as of April 17, 2026. Any app named “XChat” or “X Chat” on Google Play right now is not from X Corp.
These fake apps may:
- Steal your X login credentials by asking for them upon install
- Contain malware that reads other apps on your phone
- Harvest your contacts, photos, and messages
- Install adware that shows ads across your device
Multiple fake XChat apps have already appeared. One reportedly climbed to #3 on the App Store Social charts (on iOS) before being flagged. The same pattern will hit Google Play when interest peaks.
How to verify you’re not installing a fake:
- The official XChat app will be from developer “X Corp”
- It will only appear after X Corp officially announces Android availability
- X Corp will announce it on the @chat account on X
- If you see an XChat app on Google Play now, it is not official
Do not install any XChat app on Android right now. Wait for official confirmation.
What Android users should do right now
If you want to use XChat and only have Android, your options are:
Option 1: Wait
The safest choice. XChat will probably come to Android within a year. No risk.
Option 2: Use a friend’s or family member’s iPhone
Not ideal for daily use, but works for one-off messages.
Option 3: Use an alternative encrypted messenger on Android
If you want encrypted messaging today, three options work on Android:
- Signal — the gold standard for privacy. Free, open source, cross-platform. See our XChat vs Signal comparison.
- WhatsApp — owned by Meta, but has strong end-to-end encryption and huge user base. See our XChat vs WhatsApp comparison.
- Telegram — feature-rich but default chats are NOT end-to-end encrypted. You must use “Secret Chats” for encryption. See our XChat vs Telegram comparison.
For daily private messaging on Android, Signal is the closest match to what XChat promises.
Option 4: Get on the X waitlist (if one exists)
X Corp has not announced an Android waitlist. If they do, the announcement will come through @chat on X. Following that account is the fastest way to get notified.
If you’re tempted to sideload XChat from an APK
Don’t.
Some websites may offer XChat as an APK download for Android. These are not legitimate. Three reasons:
- No official Android build exists yet. So any APK you find is either fake, repackaged malware, or an unauthorized port.
- Sideloading bypasses Google Play’s safety checks. Your phone is at higher risk.
- Even if an APK works, it’s not getting updates. Security patches won’t install. You’re permanently vulnerable.
Wait for the official release.
How we’ll cover the Android launch
We’ll update this article the moment X Corp announces an official Android date. In the meantime, bookmark our news section for ongoing XChat coverage.
If you follow @chat on X, you’ll get the announcement directly too.
The bottom line
- No official XChat Android app exists right now
- No announced timeline, but likely 3-12 months after iOS
- Web version may come sooner, but not confirmed
- Do not download any XChat app on Google Play — all current listings are fake
- Signal is the best Android alternative while you wait
This is frustrating for the 70% of the world on Android. There’s no workaround at launch. Patience is the only option — unless you’re willing to accept security risk, which you shouldn’t.
We’ll update this page as soon as X Corp breaks its silence.
